In Mondial River West, you’re close to the action for St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago, one of the city’s most celebrated holidays.
The Film Festival
You can get your green on early at the Irish Film Festival beginning March 1st at the Logan Theater. The festival shows domestic premiers and recent releases of contemporary Irish films. From documentaries to dramas, they highlight the extraordinary diversity and creativity of Irish filmmaking.
The Chicago River
On St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, the Chicago River goes green at 9:00 am for five hours between Columbus and Wacker Drives. The best viewing spots include Michigan Avenue Bridge (east side), Columbus Drive Bridge (west side) and Banks of the Chicago Riverwalk between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive.
Packed among the parade of floats waving green, white, and orange flags are bagpipers, marching bands, Irish step dancers, and dignitaries. The three-hour parade begins at noon and marches on despite the weather. It starts at Balbo and Columbus and proceeds north on Columbus to the viewing stand in front of Buckingham Fountain. The best viewing position is in Grant Park where the parade begins.
The Irish American Heritage Center Festival
After the parade, enjoy Irish music, dance, food, gifts, and activities at the St. Patrick’s Festival throughout the Irish American Heritage Center.
The Forever Green Party
On March 9th, get in the party mood at Forever Green‘s 43rd annual blast with Irish music, dancing, and craic (fun and amusement). The party runs from 6:30 pm to 11:00 pm at the Chicago Cultural Center.
Finally, what is Chicago without a marathon? St. Patrick’s Day is a good excuse for a marathon, not that Chicago needs an excuse. Here’s a rundown of the runs:
- Chicago Get Lucky Half Marathon: 7K and 14K, beginning at Soldier Field Stadium Green and going south along the lake. Be sure to wear green.
- St. Paddy’s Day 5K and 8K Run/Walk: 5K and 8K, beginning in Lincoln Park and ending with Irish music, entertainment, and refreshments. Best costumes win prizes.
Also, be sure to check out your favorite restaurants and bars for their St. Patrick Day specials.
