The American Writers Museum is one of Chicago’s most unique museums. The museum’s mission is to “celebrate the enduring influence of American writers on our history, identity, culture, and daily lives.” If you love literature, writing, or history, there is certainly something for you at AWM.  They are currently offering a wonderful selection of virtual museum experiences that you can dive into from the comfort of our Chicago apartments

Virtual Exhibits

The museum’s virtual exhibits wonderfully imitate the experience of strolling through an exhibit in-person, with writing, pictures, and video about each topic. In Frederick Douglass: Agitator, you can explore the life and work of one of America’s greatest writers and orators. If you’re interested in more modern writing, take a look at My America: Immigrant and Refugee Writers Today.¬†Each of these exhibits will certainly provide you with an experience you won’t soon forget.¬†

Video Tours

AWM’s YouTube channel allows you to step into the museum itself through an engaging library of videos. Start by taking a virtual tour of the museum led by President Carey Cranston, filled with tons of fascinating insider knowledge. You can take a deeper dive into the Tools of the Trade exhibit with the museum’s “resident typewriter expert,” too. This tour includes a look at Frederick Douglass’s inkwell, Maya Angelou’s typer, Helen Keller’s braille writer, and other incredible treasures.

With the American Writer Museum’s podcast, you can “attend” its best events without leaving your couch. Every episode brings you conversations with leading writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, comics, television, and more. Featured guests include Sandra Cisneros, Natasha Trethewey, Saeed Jones, and other fascinating luminaries.
